Tactical and Headlamps: How to Compare Light, Battery, and Runtime
When choosing a flashlight, it is worth comparing more than just the maximum lumen rating. Beam shape, lighting mode, battery, and the stated runtime in that same mode all matter. This guide separates handheld flashlights and headlamps to help you choose based on the space you need to light and the expected use time.
We focus on three references from the SERMILITAR catalog: Petzl ARIA 1 RGB, Olight Warrior 3S and Olight iMini 2. They solve different needs. The selection and recommendations are based on documented features; they are not the result of our own comparative test.
Headlamp, handheld flashlight, or keychain light: start with the format
A headlamp makes sense for preparing gear, reading instructions, or working up close with your hands free. A handheld flashlight lets you aim the light without turning your head and choose where you place or store it. A keychain light prioritizes always carrying a small source of light for brief tasks.
Also think about portability. A comfortable strap, a clip, or a keychain can matter more than having a maximum mode you will hardly ever use.
Comparison: a specific mode and its power source
Each row corresponds to a single mode. For models with several levels, we have chosen an intermediate one; this way you can assess a typical-use option without confusing it with maximum output.
On small screens, swipe the table sideways to view all columns.
| Model and format | Compared mode | Output | Declared range | Runtime in that mode | Included power source |

Which model is worth considering for the task
Petzl ARIA 1 RGB: hands-free close-range lighting
The ARIA 1 RGB uses a wide beam and offers several white-light levels, as well as colors. To organize a bag or work on a table, I would start by considering that light spread and the comfort of the headband. Check that you can tilt it toward the task without straining your posture.
The table uses the three AAA batteries included. With that power source, Petzl states 350 lm on MAX POWER; these should not be mixed with the figures for an optional rechargeable battery. If you choose a CORE 2, check its specific chart: runtime also changes, even though the headlamp is the same.

Olight Warrior 3S: a handheld option with multiple levels
The Warrior 3S fits if you prefer to carry a rechargeable handheld flashlight and adjust the intensity for different moments. In MED, Olight states 200 lm, 90 M, and 13 hours; that is the combination we use to compare it.
Before buying, consider where you will store it, how it feels in your hand, and whether you will carry its charging system. The included battery makes it easy to start using the set, but it does not mean that any battery of the same size is compatible. Always check the reference supported by Olight.

Olight iMini 2: light for brief moments
The iMini 2 offers a different purchase: a small flashlight to go with your keys. Its single mode removes the need to choose levels. It can be useful for finding a lock or locating a nearby object, always keeping in mind its stated one-hour runtime.
The manual specifies charging through a built-in USB-A connector. Make sure you have a suitable port; do not assume all rechargeable flashlights use USB-C. For long activities, consider a main light with modes and power suited to the expected duration.

How to read lumens, range, and runtime
Lumens indicate luminous output. They do not by themselves describe how the light is distributed. A wide beam can be comfortable for close-up work; a more focused beam sends more intensity to one area. First decide what you need to see and at what distance.
Declared range is a laboratory measurement. In the FL1 protocol that Petzl explains, it is measured up to the point where illumination reaches 0.25 lux. It does not mean you can recognize any detail at that distance under all conditions.
Runtime does not equal constant brightness. Petzl explains that FL1 counts the time until the light drops to 10% of the initial value taken as the reference. A flashlight may reduce output before it is depleted. Therefore, if the manufacturer publishes several output and runtime ranges, they must be read together.
The reserve that Petzl shows separately is not included in that calculation. Do not add reserve, maximum runtime, and maximum output to create a performance level that no mode offers. You can consult the Petzl explanation of the FL1 protocol.
What to check before buying
- Usage time: compare the mode you expect to use and leave room for changes of plan.
- Power source: confirm which batteries or battery the reference includes, how it is charged, and what you need to carry separately.
- Controls: look for buttons and settings you can use comfortably, even with your usual gloves if you wear them.
- Durability: check the rating and its specific conditions. Water resistance does not mean permission for any kind of immersion.
- Portability: check the closure, clip, or strap and prevent the gear from turning on accidentally inside the bag.
The most common mistakes are comparing only the maximum lumen output, assuming the rechargeable battery always comes included, and transferring figures between versions with similar names. Identifying the model and power source avoids much of that confusion.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need more than 1,000 lumens for everyday use?
There is no universal threshold. For reading or looking for nearby objects, low modes may be more useful; for more open spaces, also check the beam and range. Compare the task and the expected duration.
Can I compare two flashlights by their maximum runtime?
Only if you check what light they provide in that mode. A very long runtime may correspond to minimal intensity. Always review mode, output, power source, and measurement criteria.
What should I choose as a gift without worrying about sizes?
A flashlight avoids clothing sizing, but it helps to know whether the person prefers a headlamp, handheld, or keychain light and how they will recharge it. Expand your ideas in our gift guide for military personnel.
