This motto has its origin in the shouts and slogans used by the Christian troops during the Reconquista. Saint James the Apostle is also the patron saint of Spain due to the influence this saint had throughout much of the country's history, an influence that still endures in the north of Spain thanks to the popular Camino de Santiago.
